Why Fitness?

Every individual has the opportunity to have say in how their life proceeds.  Granted, “things” will always happen.  Even in the midst of those things, we can still have control over ourselves in each and every moment. The tried and true expression, “We can’t control the wind, but we can adjust our sails,” holds strong.


Fitness is an opportunity for each individual to be proactive with their life, no matter what might come his or her way.  With all of the distractions that go on around us in this crazy and chaotic world, the simple act of taking care of ourselves is a beautiful opportunity with far reaching benefits.


Despite the importance of fitness, many among us just do not embrace it as part of our normal day.  There are lots of reasons, but often it comes down to a perceived inability which stems from not knowing what to do or where to start.  Other barriers include, but are not limited to, limited resources, support, knowledge and opportunities.  Cancer survivors are faced with all of the same barriers as a non-cancer population, in addition to the physical and emotional barriers created by a cancer diagnosis and its treatment. 


Fitness is profound way to take care of yourself, making you stronger in every sense.  It offers an empowering pathway for us all - for cancer survivors and for those without a direct cancer diagnosis.  Surviving Strong is here to support your journey to fitness, providing you with a supportive and uplifting environment and the knowledge and resources to become proactive with your health by incorporating fitness into your daily lifestyle. 


Cancer does not discriminate and neither will we.  Our programming will be open to anyone touched by cancer, with first priority to those with a direct cancer diagnosis.  The one attribute that will be necessary with our participants will be an openness to embrace fitness – physical, nutritional and emotional - and a willingness to live an intentionally active lifestyle while having fun!
