Helping EVERYONE touched by cancer live healthy and strong, using fitness – physical, nutritional and emotional – as the foundation for every day.
Surviving Strong, a 501c3 non-profit corporation based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, was founded in 2009 with the main goal of reducing the barriers to fitness for cancer survivors and their support network.
Once a person has been told that they have cancer, life will never be the same. While you hear the positive anecdotes of all that cancer cannot take from someone, the reality is that cancer and its treatment can and does take many things: energy to complete daily tasks, physical strength, trust in the innate abilities of the body, balance, confidence, security in the future and so many more. The reality is that cancer is cells gone wrong; your body has betrayed you. There is a time for pity, but then there is a time to take control back.
As a cancer survivor, I experienced first hand how physical activity positively impacted my treatment and recovery. My initial intention was to create a place for others – cancer survivors and supporters - to experience the strength that comes with physical movement and the incredible empowerment that comes from being proactive with your health.
Cancer affects us all on some level - directly, indirectly through a family member, friend or acquaintance, or as a potential. The American Cancer Society states that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed in our lifetime.
F
or everyone, cancer survivor and supporter alike, fitness - physical, nutritional, and emotional - has been shown to reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as many other serious illnesses. You can have an impact on your quality of life. While there are no guarantees, you have the power to take control of your health, right here and right now through fitness.
And the reality is that life is known for us curveballs, surprises and challenges that we never saw coming. Surviving Strong is about living healthy and strong so that we can handle whatever challenges life may bring.
We are survivors and supporters alike, people at all levels of ability, and together we live amazing and strong. We use our most powerful tools—our bodies, our minds and our hearts. Together we learn, sweat, laugh, train, and build the amazing bonds of friendship. Seize the opportunity to be strong, stronger perhaps then you ever thought you could be.
