About Us

Surviving Strong, a 501c3 non-profit corporation based in the Philadelphia area, was founded in 2009 with the main goal of reducing the barriers to fitness for cancer survivors and their support network.  But cancer affects us all on some level - directly, indirectly through a family member, friend or acquaintance, or as a potential.  The American Cancer Society states that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed in our lifetime.  Cancer does not discriminate and neither do we.

Once a person has been told that they have cancer, life will never be the same.  While you hear the positive anecdotes of all that cancer cannot take from someone, the reality is that cancer and its treatment can and does take many things:  energy to complete daily tasks, physical strength, trust in the innate abilities of the body, balance, confidence, security in the future and many more.  The reality is that cancer is cells gone wrong; your body has betrayed you.   There is a time for pity, but then there is a time to take control back.

Fitness offers an empowering pathway for cancer survivors.

Fitness is essential to the overall wellbeing of every individual.  Yet, despite its importance there are many barriers which limit people from incorporating fitness into their lifestyle.  Cancer survivors are faced with all of the same barriers as a non-cancer population, in addition to the new obstacles created by a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.  Our coaches and mentors will help you every step of the way so you can become proactive with your health by incorporating fitness into your daily lifestyle.

For everyone, cancer survivor and supporter alike, fitness - physical, nutritional, and emotional - has been shown to reduce the risk of developing cancer and many other serious illnesses.  You can have an impact on your quality of life.  Right here.  Right now.

Along the way, with other members of Surviving Strong, you will train, sweat, learn, laugh and build the bonds of an amazing support network.
